Making Changes
Sometimes I wonder how writers survive writing a novel.
I've changed my story, at least 3 times so far and I'm about to change it again. It simply isn't how I want it to be!
So if you have been reading my previous posts, and other than the fact that the chapters that I published no longer look like that (I've been making some improvements... I think), well... the plot is a little bit different now and the story is already considerably longer.
Yet, I do find some sort of solace in the fact that I do not have to live on my writings otherwise I'd be in a very tough spot considering the amount of time I'm spending on this story. Don't care much though. If it is not how I want it to be, then I make the changes that I think are appropriate.
I know it's been a while since I last wrote something, but then I start thinking "who the hell am I writing for?". Curiously, the answer to that question is quite simple. I am writing for myself, pretty much. Everything else is just added bonus. I don't feel the need to impress the audience with my outstanding writing skills and I am very much aware of my flaws (which I should actually address at some point, just not when I'm on a creative spiral).
Anyway, all this just to say that Writing is a very tough business. There's a lot of brilliant writers out there but technique alone will get you nowhere. It will help you a great deal though, but you need more. Writing is art, is expression, is an extension of yourself. You have to feel it it, pour a little bit of you in it if you want it to work. Otherwise it will be just emptiness no matter how many words you put together just to form a text. That is how I see Writing, and how I distinguish writers... and also why I wonder how they survive their work, because it can be truly exhausting and obsessive.
So, my thumbs are up for all those excellent writers out there (known and unknown), and who are brave enough to make a living on their work. Dudes, you're awesome! Keep on surviving because I need you for inspiration (ah ah, this is a joke but it really has some truth in it).
